快速地進行了每一項檢查，好像在玩闖關遊戲。同樣的事情經歷過多次後，很難不以過來人的眼光看待周遭的動靜，似曾相識的感覺。
檢查完畢騎車要回家，又一次看見翠嶺道兩旁停得密密麻麻的車輛，突然腦中浮起《白噪音》開頭描繪開學盛況的場景︰
總覺得文字的魔力很神奇，從紙上透過眼球進入大腦後，產生的圖像竟可以如此清晰和深刻，深刻到成為現實生活的參照。無怪乎喬伊斯敢誇言人們可以根據他的《尤里西斯》來重造都伯林。德里羅詳細列出的物品不僅象徵（從以前到今天都沒啥改變的）大學生的生活方式（運動、音樂、性、垃圾食物，除了黑膠唱片和錄音帶換成CD或MP3之外），更精準地傳達了一個冷眼旁觀者的心情／心態。

The station wagons arrived at noon, a long shining line that coursed through the west campus. In single file they eased around the orange I-beam sculpture and moved toward the dormitories.
